Scranton grew out of the iron and coal industries that blossomed in the mid-19th
century. Although the city plundered into recession when the production of anthracite
coal slowed after World War II, Scranton has endured and prospered, becoming
a popular tourist destination laden with historic sites and museums that invoke
nostalgia. Perhaps Scranton's most impressive attraction, Steamtown National
Historic Site pays homage to the history of steam railroads with one of the
country's largest collections of period locomotives, and the site's visitor
center, history museum and technology museum provide a thorough overview of
American steam railroading. The Anthracite Museum Complex documents another
part of Scranton's industrial past—the mining and textile industries. For a
closer encounter with Scranton's coal mining heritage, tours of Lackawanna Coal
Mine take visitors 300 ft (91 m) underground via rail car, where they embark
upon a walking tour of the mine's arteries.
